Tips on siting your bird nest with video cameraChoosing the right location for your bird box with camera will determine whether or not birds will choose your bird box, birds do look for sites that will be safe from predators and provide shelter from the elements.
* Bird Boxes should be between 2m - 5m above ground to ensure safety from predators * Set up your nest box between August and February which is outside the breeding season, this will allow good time for birds to get settled in * Your bird box should small drainage holes in the base to allow for drainage. * The lid needs to have a catch to secure against magpies and squirrels * Nest boxes should be made from untreated wood as treated wood can cause irritations * Bird boxes should be made from wood sustainable sources (look for the FSC logo) * Use a strap to secure to the trunk rather than screws, which can harm a tree * It is a ge=reat help to have thinner perching branches that will hold the weight of fledglings, but not their heavier predators * Nesting bird like quieter parts of the garden, doesn't really matter as your camera will capture all the exciting activity * Robins and wrens in particular look for nesting sites in good thick foliage * Birds prefer to line their own nests, leaving pet or human hair out in spring will be a great help Avoid synthetic materials |

Maintaining your bird box* Your bird box will need to be cleaned out in the autumn to avoid disturbing the occupants this will help prevent diseases and parasites spreading to new occupants * Use boiling hot water to sterilise the box and allow to dry * A well position, clean nest in a harsh winter can save birds from perishing * Please note: Unhatched eggs can only legally remove between October and January and they must then be destroyed. This is one of those laws that make sense (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981)
